I have currently three different profiles my main profile, "TheMasterCaver", which I play my first world on (more or less vanilla 1.6.4), "TMCW", which is for my own mod of the same name, and a "Testing" profile that I use for testing things, all using separate game directories so they are entirely separate (note that these are all traditional "jar" modded versions where the entire mod is in the Minecraft jar with no other files other than a custom options.txt file but the same applies for any modloader that uses the current working directory, not just shoving everything in. The vanilla launcher, which is all that I've ever used, also makes it easy to have multiple modded profiles by letting you change the game directory each one will have its own saves, configurations, mods, etc (IMO, this should be mandatory even if you only play a single modded profile or multiple vanilla versions as countless issues occur when different versions try reading in settings saved in a different version - or you accidentally load a world in the wrong version).
